Don’t throw away your Lego says town school

-

HINCKLEY’S Dorothy Goodman School is appealing for old Lego to help aid their student’s learning abilities.

The appeal has been given a boost by the Rotary Club of Market Bosworth who’s message is to simply not let go of your old Lego and to give it to the school who will put it to very good use.

The Dorothy Goodman School educates more than 250 pupils aged between three and 19-years-old.

The popular children’s toy of interlocking bricks, play an important role in enhancing their student’s development, which is why it is so important for old or disused pieces to be donated.

Lego Club leader, Joanne Waring, explains: “Lego is used here in a very structured way, helping students develop a whole range of proficiencies.

“They learn to improve their motor skills, to be patient, to persevere and most importantly, to communicate.

“Simple things such as asking for help or simply being quiet - the things that most of us take for granted - actually have to be learned.

“Working with Lego in a systematic manner goes a long way to helping achieve this.”

The school use both full sets and loose Lego according to their need and in their 30 minute weekly Lego Club sessions, students use full sets to build their model as a controlled project, with their progress being monitored.

Once finished their models are photographed to record their achievement.

To help with the collection, four Lego drop-off points have been set up across Hinckley town, one at the reception of the Atkins Building in Lower Bond Street and the other at St Mary’s Church in town.

Two other drop-off points can be found at the Michaelmas House of Market Bosworth and the town’s Thyme Cafe, where people are encouraged to take along any form of the brick they may be unintentionally hoarding.

The appeal is expected to run throughout autumn to see how much of the Lego can be collected.
