Narrow win for Burbage

-

BURBAGE RFC 1st XV, went away to face Pershore RFC in the first game of the season and pulled off a dramatic last second victory from a converted try.

Burbage RFC went away with high expectations in the lead up to the game and took to the field in a positive manner. The home team however had their own expectations to meet and soon showed Burbage that they weren’t there just to make up the numbers.

Pershore RFC took the lead early from a driving maul 5m out and soon added to the score from a turnover in midfield leaving Burbage RFC stunned and 12 points down after 10 minutes.

What resulted from this was a spate of ‘Fijian style’ quick offloads from Burbage as they tried to fight back and put some points on the board. However, Pershore RFC weren’t going to allow Burbage RFC to spoil their opening day party and showed that they were very capable at the break down forcing several turnovers and quick breaks against a wavering Burbage team.

Burbage RFC dug deep and both teams started scoring points for fun by going wide and through the middle of the opposition’s defence. With 10 minutes to go Burbage found themselves 12 points down.

The last 10 minutes saw an onslaught from Burbage RFC in open play and in the final seconds Burbage RFC scored making the score 33-33.

A poised and focused Michael Moore stepped up to take the conversion and slotted the ball through the posts adding the extra two points to the Burbage scoreline with the final whistle sounding as the ball hit the ground and a stunned Pershore crowd looking on.

Final Score: Pershore RFC 33 - 35 Burbage RFC
