New table tennis season about to start

-

THE new Hinckley Table Tennis season is about to get under way and once again there will be two divisions with twenty one teams participating.

A league spokesperson said: “The start of the season has however been overshadowed by some awful news about a couple of local players.

“The League & the George Ward Club has lost on of its long serving players in the past couple of weeks with the news that Derek Thompson had passed away after a short illness. Derek played for nearly forty years in the Nuneaton and for over twenty years in the Hinckley League. He represented Nuneaton Vetts on many occasions and along with team mates Roger Hill , Leigh Morris and Mark Perkins collected Divi- sion One League titles with both Ashby road Sports and George Ward Clubs.

“He worked for many years at Churchill’s Engineering in Market Bosworth. He will be greatly missed and our condolences go out to his family. His funeral will take place on Friday 14 September at Nuneaton Crematorium at 4pm.

“Sadly there was more bad news a few days ago when for Cat player Dael Sidwell was involved in a terrible accident close to the Milestone pub, he was severely injured with a broken pelvis and his condition is currently stable but critical. We wish Dael a speedy recovery from his injuries.”

On a more positive note congratulations to Hinckley’s Eileen Shaler who reached the quarter finals of the World Veterans WS70 in Las Vegas in June. Well done Eileen.
