LYCHGATE Fisheries owner Paul Bates recorded his first ever 100lb plus catch at the venue to win Saturday’s Open match. Drawn on peg 41 Paul stated on the feeder, but having only caught one carp he switched to the pole.

Ashby canal legend Doug Dimbleby took the honours in the fourth round of the Pete Hogg Memorial series and moved into a near uncatchable position with just a couple of rounds to go. Fished along the Woodside length, Doug caught a rare Ashby Canal tench, weighing 3lb, and backed it up with roach and small bream to finish with 5lb 3ozs. John Wainwright weighed 1lb 12ozs of small fish to take second place with Graham Whyte third with 1lb 7ozs. After this round Doug Dimbleby has 18 points, John Wainwright is second with 9 points while Graham Whyte is third with 7 points.

Lychgate’s “Fine Line Friday” Open where Carp don’t count was won by Paul Bates, who took the honours by just 6ozs ! Drawn on peg 5, Paul caught small roach on the maggot before changing to sweet corn baits. Catching the odd bream for the rest of the match to finish with 19lb 10ozs. Jeff Robertshaw on peg 13, hooked and landed seven carp, that didn’t count, but whilst doing that meant that he couldn’t catch those vital few ounces needed to win, he had to settle for second place with 19lb 4ozs. Ian Shirley caught roach and bream to take third place with 15lb 10ozs.

Lutterworth travelled to Phase One at Makin’s where they fished A bank on Lake 2 and Lake 4. Overall winner was Keith Vickers who weighed 95lb 15ozs from peg 7A on Lake 2. Shackerstone’s Sunday Open match turned into a bream “fest” as lots of small bream feed throughout the length. Geoff Taylor took the honours with a 4lb 3oz catch. Doug Dimbleby came second with 3lb 3oz while Rob Bream came third with 2lb 8oz.

Brookfield Open match on Sunday at Stoke Golding didn’t fish as well as expected with Stu Campton needing just 17lb 8ozs to win. David Sutton came second with 13lb 1ozs. Martyn Woodward finished third with a 9lb catch.

Although the top ten still all weighed over 20lbs, it was hard work for most in Lychgate Wednesday Open. With the carp not feeding in numbers most catches had a good number of “silver” fish in them. Chris Duffy qualified for Lychomania finals with a winning 36lb 10oz catch from peg 23. Terry Brindley came second with 30lb 6ozs from peg 2 with John Lavender taking third place with 29lb 2ozs.
