Youngsters in action at county event

THE Leicestershire County Junior and Cadet Selection event took place last weekend and a number of Hinckley cadet and junior boys and girls took part mainly from G Ward TTC and Market Bosworth. Several performed very well to get into the county rankings for this season.

In the Junior Boys Callum Dale was ranked 5th with Matt Wynne 6th and Oliver Wynne 7th. Number one junior was Jack Rogers from Leicester. In the Junior Girls Freya Wynne was ranked number 4. The number 1 was Connie Dumelow from Leicester.

In the Cadets Oliver Wynne was ranked at number 2 with James Walker at 4, Bevan Wale at 5 and Harry Thomas at 6. The number 1 was Oscar Bentley.

For the Cadet Girls Freya Wynne was ranked at 3 with Maisie Dowler-Morley at 6 and Eppie Southern and Alice Cleaver at 7th equal. The number 1 was Connie Dumelow.

In the first division of the Hinckley League G Ward B won a very tense and close match against Cat B by 6 sets to 4. No fewer than five sets went to either four or five games. G Ward shot into a 2-0 lead but Cat B drew level in the fourth set, the match then seesawed until the ninth set when new boy and man of the match Neil Matthams (G WB) overcame Steve Bessant to give GWB 5 sets to 4 lead. Matthams and Bob Whittaker then sealed the victory by defeating Andy Searle and John Winsper in straight games.

Promoted G Ward D found life in Division 1 a little tough as they took on Barlestone A. Adam Pettitt (BA) won his three with ease but Edward Brown (GWD) took a close victory over Charlie Bateman (BA) the match going to five. Callum Dale (GWD) defeated Russ Pettitt (BA) in three straight games and young Oliver Wynne (GWD) went very close also against Russ Pettitt finally losing 13-11 in the fifth.

Queen’s Mira were too strong for Barlestone B running out winners by 8 sets to 2. Dan Hogan (QM) was man of the match with three straight wins but spare a thought for Norman Weaver (BB) who lost all three matches despite taking two opponents to five games and the other to four.

Cat H found GWA far too strong with the Barwell side running up the first 10 sets to nil score of the season. Fielding new boys Andy Spring and Elliot Clark they were just too powerful for CAT H. All the sets were won in three straight games with the exception of the doubles. Man of the match was Jason Essex (GWA)
