Nominate your sports heroes for annual borough awards
THE borough’s annual sports awards competition is back for its 12th year and the people of Hinckley and Bosworth need your nominations to win.
The organisers of Hinckley and Bosworth’s Local Sport and Health Alliance awards competition, are urging people to nominate those individuals and teams whose success deserves to be more widely celebrated.
The awards ceremony gives recognition to those whose dedication, commitment or performance has excelled this year within their sport; someone who has been an inspiration; someone who has always gone that extra mile to support others; or someone who has changed their life around for the better through sport.
Previous winners include England international clay shooter Joy Hirons, of Stoke Golding, who capped a year to remember in 2014 with the Sportsperson Year award.
Another previous winner is Desford Lawn Tennis Club and East Midlands Special Olympic Tennis Player Matthew Chilvers who won the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award in 2015.
Matthew won the award for his impressive year after striking gold at the European Special Olympics Tennis Tournament in Luxemburg in 2013.
More recently, former Royal Artillery man Steve Cockayne, from Hinckley, bagged Sportsperson of the Year in 2017.
After competing in the 100m sprint, shot put, discuss and powerlifting events in the 2017 Invictus Games for ex servicemen and women in Toronto, Canada, Steve received the award. He was competing following the amputation below the knee of his right leg after a training accident.
Hinckley’s very own Olympic torch bearer, Denise Larrad took home the award for Unsung of the Hero last year.
This year, nominations are needed for a number of categories including Disabled Sportsperson of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Unsung Hero, Coach of the Year and School of the Year.
The 2018 Hinckley and Bosworth Sports Awards will be held at The Hinckley Rugby Club on Tuesday November 20 from 6pm to 9pm.
Executive Member for Sport and Leisure at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Councillor Maureen Cook, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for you to show your appreciation of a local person who voluntarily makes a difference to local sport.”
Nominations need to be made before 5pm on November 5, and forms are available online at www.hbsha.org.uk/ sports-award.
Those who nominate or are nominated will be invited to attend the evening, where a light buffet will also be provided.
