Takeaway offers Foodbank vouchers to most needy

- NICHOLAS DAWSON nicholas.dawson@reachplc.com

A CHIP shop is helping provide meals for the most needy in the community.

Chris’s Fish ‘n’ Chip’s in Barwell is offering Foodbank vouchers to help make sure needy families can get a hot meal.

Owner Strad Kyriacou said: “We have issued the Hinckley Foodbank with the vouchers and they will be responsible for their allocation.

“They will be issued to people via the Foodbank in their emergency food aid.”

The vouchers will be valid for a week at a time, with a set menu for people to choose from.

They will be limited to those within a two-mile radius of the shop, or for others who can get access to the shop.

Mr Kyriacou said: “We are starting this as a campaign, the Takeaway Foodbank Drive, and plan to encourage and get more takeaways to do the same, to create a network around the country.

“We are the first, and the first in the world to do so - that we know of - so let’s see where we can take it.”

“I’ve only just started so we are trialling first, ironing out all the kinks and getting some info, research and feedback from it.

“Then we can be the example and model for others to follow.”

The shop is hoping to get some celebrities to back the campaign and help raise awareness.

The chippy said in a post on its Facebook page: “We have partnered with Hinckley Foodbank to help our community when they need us the most.

“We think this is as an amazing gesture of goodwill and would love you guys to spread the word with a like, comment and a share.”

The post had a lot of positive responses in comments below.

One person said: “May I just say as I’ve used foodbanks how truly wonderful this is.

“When you get a limited supply of food something like this is truly amazing.”

Karen Connolly posted: “Fabulous idea, let’s hope more companies follow your lead.

“You and your family are a credit to the community.”

Strad and his wife Gina were recently interviewed about fish and chips on BBC Radio Leicester.

The couple also made an appearance plugging their shop on primetime television, in a Just Eat-sponsored ad break during the X Factor.
