IT’S tight at the top of division one of the table tennis league with just six points separating the top four sides. The contenders are GW B, Barlestone A, Goons and GW A.

Goons, last season’s champions, came back to form in their latest matches, firstly winning a very close match away to Queen’s Mira by 6 sets to 4. Mira went into a two set lead early on but Goons experience then came to the fore with wins for Jason Wood- field over Steve Brough, followed by a five set thriller which saw Ian Wetherley overcome a determined Dan Hogan, then Gary Pitts had a three straight sets win over Brough and this was followed by Woodfield defeating Ian Heavey.

Woodfield closed out the match winning the eighth set to claim the win. In their next match they overwhelmed Cat H by 10 sets to nil to secure a top four spot as this stage of the season.

Cat A continue to collect wins, they defeated Barlestone B by 10 sets to nil and followed this with a closer victory over Barlestone A by 7 sets to 3. There were a number of very close sets. Charlie Bateman (BA) just losing out to Pete Jamieson (Cat A) 7-11 in the fifth games.

G Ward A visited Barlestone B and came away with a fine 8 sets to 2 victory to keep up their challenge. Both Andy Spring and Elliott Clarke (both GWA) won their three. Alex Westerby (BB) collected a good win in five games over Leigh Morris (GWA).
