A NEW family zone offering arts, crafts, play and storytelling has opened at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre.

Aimed at children up to the age of eight, Bosworth Discovery Zone has been designed alongside families to provide an informal play space which helps to make history fun and entertaining.

The discovery zone is located in the Heritage Centre courtyard and includes internal and external spaces. Families and community groups can use the space to run their own sessions and take part in activities including making princess hats, crowns, dragons and shields and colouring-in.

The fun continues on the lawn, where families can eat their lunch on the picnic bench, play on the stepping stones and in the maze, design a shield and weave their own tree.

The zone also offers a relaxing space for children with a range of disabilities including autism and Asperger’s syndrome, with a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities to support a mixture of play.

Many of the activities are designed to be self-led, or supported by volunteers and will be free of charge.

Activities led by trained facilitators may attract a small charge.

Councillor Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for heritage, leisure and arts, said: “Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre aims to make history enjoyable and accessible to visitors of all ages, and we are very pleased to be able to add the Bosworth Discovery Zone to our growing range of activities and events for families.

“The activities in the zone have been created to complement all the family-friendly activities on offer at the site, from our award-winning exhibition, family trails and guided walks to the children’s menu and child-friendly lunch boxes in the Tithe Barn, so that there is now even more for children and families to enjoy.”

Throughout October, November and December, there will be lots of Battle of Bosworth and holidaythemed activities; from a Lego day and storytelling to outside play in the maze and games.

Families can also book onto one of the many family-friendly guided walks and visit the award-winning exhibition.

The Bosworth Discovery Zone will be open during regular opening hours from Thursday to Sunday on most weeks.
