Driver suffers ‘serious’ head injury in collision

Accident happened on A5 near Hinckley Island hotel

A 28-year-old driver suffered a “serious” head injury after his car collided with a lorry on the A5 near Hinckley.

The man, who was driving a white convertibl­e BMW M3, was hurt after his car was in collision with the back of a HGV opposite the Hinckley Island Hotel at about 2pm on Monday last week.

The motorist was taken to hospital.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them about the incident, which saw the road closed in both directions between Smockingto­n Hollow and the M69 roundabout for several hours on Monday.

A Leicesters­hire Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to Watling Street at 2pm to a report of a two-vehicle collision on the northbound carriagewa­y of the A5, close to the M69 roundabout.

“The collision involved a white BMW M3 convertibl­e and a white HGV lorry.

“The driver of the car, a 28-year-old man, suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

“The driver of the lorry was not injured.”

The road was closed shortly after the incident.

The southbound carriagewa­y was reopened at about 4.10pm.

The northbound carriagewa­y was reopened by 7.25pm.

Detective Constable Paul Bingham, of the force’s Serious Collision Investigat­ion Unit, is asking for anyone who saw the vehicles before the collision or witnessed the incident to contact him.

He said: “The incident happened opposite the Hinckley Island Hotel just before 2pm.

“Please get in touch if you were in the area at the time of the collision and have informatio­n or saw either of the vehicles before the incident took place. Similarly, if you were travelling along this stretch of the A5 and have any dashcam footage of just prior to the collision or of the incident itself please come forward. It could prove helpful.”
