A WOMAN had to be cut free from the car she was travelling in after it overturned on the M69.

Police closed off part of the southbound carriageway of the motorway between Junction 1 for the A5 at Hinckley and the M6, following the incident, which happened at about 12.45pm on Monday.

Fire crews, paramedics and Highways officers were also sent to the scene of the crash, involving two cars.

One of the vehicles reportedly “rolled over a number of times” and a woman was left trapped as it lay on its side.

It was one of three collisions which closed sections of the M69 and nearby A5 in the Hinckley area on Monday afternoon, causing widespread delays and traffic disruption.

About 30 minutes after the first crash there was another collision, this time involving two lorries, on the M69 southbound, between Junction 2 for Sapcote and Junction 1 for Hinckley.

One of the lorry drivers was taken to the University Hospital of Coventry at Walsgrave.

A police spokeswoman said his injuries were “not believed to be life-threatening”.

Crews from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service worked with medics to free the woman injured in the earlier collision, who was also taken to the trauma unit at Walsgrave.

The extent of her injuries, or her condition, are not known.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said they sent one ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance critical care car to the scene.

A second patient, who was out of their vehicle when they arrived, was checked over and discharged at the scene.

Firefighters left the scene at about 2.30pm after making the vehicles safe.

The road was reopened by 3.30pm.

Crews from Hinckley and the city’s Western and Southern fire stations attended the HGV crash, near Sapcote, at about 1.15pm, as traffic was queuing on the approach to the earlier collision.

A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “One person was trapped and had to be extricated by crews.

“They were placed on a longboard and transferred to the University Hospital of Coventry at Walsgrave.”

The eastbound A5 was also closed at Claybrooke Parva, south of Burbage, after a car left the carriageway and crashed into a ditch shortly before 2pm. A fire service spokesman said: “The collision involved two cars, with one male casualty trapped.

“He was freed by crews and taken to hospital by ambulance. Two further casualties were assessed at the scene.”

The road was reopened by 4.30pm.
