Police name man who was killed on anniversary

-

THE driver who died in a collision in Earl Shilton after an anniversary night out has been named by police.

Ronald James, 32, was in a green Rover Metro when it collided with a bollard in Wood Street, in the centre of the village.

Mr James, from Nuneaton, was pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday, November 17.

It followed an earlier incident which police are investigating.

It is thought Mr James had got into his car after spotting vandals damaging it.

It is claimed he followed them after they left the scene while his partner remained at the hotel and called the police.

A police spokesperson said: “Around 10 minutes before the incident we were called to a car park in the street following a report of criminal damage to a green Rover Metro.

“When officers arrived the Metro had already left the scene.

“Following enquiries, two men aged 19 and 32, have been arrested on suspicion of crimi- nal damage and released pending further investigation.

“A short time after the initial incident the Metro returned to the area and collided with a street bollard, resulting in the death of the driver.”

Police say they are keen to speak to anyone who saw the collision, or the vehicle involved beforehand.

Mr James’ brother has previously told our sister paper the Leicester Mercury: “It looks like he died instantly. It’s awful. He and his partner were out celebrating on what should have been a happy night and it ends like this.

“He has a 14-year-old stepson and I have to explain to my four kids that their uncle is gone.”
