Hughes bags win at Higham

-

SATURDAY’S Higham Lane Fishery Open was a battle between some of the area’s top carp match anglers. At the end it was Dean Hughes who took the honours. Drawn on peg 2 Dean switched between “bomb with pellet” and the pole to catch 53lb 11ozs. Andy Findlay caught the bulk of his fish on a small pellet feeder to finish second with 45lb 9ozs while Terry Sanderson legered cheese to take third place with 42lb 11ozs.

Shackerstone’s Open match was fished along the Horse & Jockey straight with anglers finding the fish shoaled up, unfortunately they weren’t shoaled up along the match length! Drawn on the Golden Peg Andy Smith landed a nice perch of 1lb plus two smaller perch to win with 1lb 2ozs. Doug Dimbleby landed eighteen small roach to take second place with 12ozs while Roger Benn finished third with a 6oz catch.

John Varley scored a convincing win in Thursday’s Higham Lane Open. Drawn on peg 4, John switched between pellet feeder and bomb and corn, to finish with 54lb 7ozs. Paul Gardner finished second with a 28lb catch while Clive Oliver came third with 27lb 6ozs.

The same peg, peg 38, produced the winner for both of the weekend’s Lychgate Fisheries contests, although the anglers used different tactics each day. On Saturday Ian Shirley pole fished single caster to catch an all “silver fish” winning 22lb, while in Sunday’s Open Andy Atkins used big baits like sweet corn and waited for bites, at the end he’d caught some decent bream, three carp and a tench to win with 35lb 14ozs, the win qualified Andy for the Lychomania Semi finals.

Wet and windy conditions made sport extremely difficult for those fishing Maynes Lakes midweek Open match. Tom Watt persevered with pole fished pellet close in to take the days top catch of just 16lb. Result Pool One, Winner; Dave Cleaver 13lb 8ozs peg 36. Pool Two, Winner; Tom Watt, peg 22.

Only one angler broke double figures in Sunday’s Brookfield Open fished at Stoke Golding. Martyn Woodward took the honours with a 12lb 10oz catch from peg 5. Stu Campton finished second with 7lb 8ozs while Ray Lewis came third with 6lb 4ozs. The next Open match will be on December 23rd, draw 9am.

It was another struggle for the anglers of Plough Angling Club’s when they visited the river Avon at Ryton for their eleventh Aggreate series match. Vince Kingham was the only one to catch some decent fish, winning with an 8lb 2oz catch of small chub. Greg Martin needed just 1lb 12ozs of small fish to take second place. George Howe came third with 1lb 8ozs.
