New school taking shape
EXCITED pupils are all set for their move into a brand new school campus in Hinckley.
Students were taken round the new centre of Dorothy Goodman School at the junction of Barwell Lane and Harwood Drive as part of an orientation day as classes begin.
External works continue on the front gate, playground and fields, as well as some of the pavement, but the car park is accessible.
Alison King, business manager at the school, said: “Once completed the building will include nine classrooms for our secondary aged pupils, all of whom have learning disabilities.
“In addition we will have three specialist rooms including Science, Food Technology (which will also support life skills for our pupils) and an Art/ Design room.
“We will also have a community room for use by professionals such as occupational health, Physiotherapy, providing support to our pupils and linking to guidance for parents.”
The complex also has a sensory room for pupils with profound and multiple learning disabilities, an immersion room to support educational and life skills, and two fitness rooms.
Ms King said: “These rooms are alongside the standard spaces you may find in a school, such as a Hall, Studio, small and large group teaching rooms.
“The building also allows us to provide catering services to our pupils at our primary school on Stoke Road as well as the pupils who will be based at our new secondary school.”
The school has been built using funding received from the Condition Improvement Fund of the Department for Education, fundraising and donations from companies and organisations to support specialist areas and resources.
Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s planning committee approved plans for the project in January 2017.
