Goons convincing win presses their claim for title challenge

GOONS continue to press their claim for title in Division One of the Table Tennis League, their recent clash with fellow contenders Cat A saw them comprehens­ively defeat the Desford side by 9 sets to 1.

Lucky Obi (Goons) being man of the match. They followed that with another victory in a very tight match with G Ward A. At three sets all Goons applied pressure with victories by J Szostak, I Whetherly and Lucky Obi to put the match beyond the Barwell side, finally claiming victory by 6 sets to 4. In their next match they easily defeated Barlestone B by 10 sets to nil. A victory which now sees them top of the table.

Cat A recovered from their loss to Goons, firstly with a hard fought draw with G Ward B, Rhys Emery (Cat A) in splendid ford to win all his matches in straight games. Teammate Pete Jamieson had to work hard to overcome Neil Matthams and Clive Stretton (both G Ward B) before succumbing to Bob Whittaker (GWB).

G Ward B were in another drawn game when they met their club mates G Ward A. No love lost here as GWA raced into a 4 sets to 1 lead before GWB started their fight back with two wins by B Whittaker and Mick Allsopp (GWB) recovering losing his first match to Jason Essex (GWA) to overcome Nick Raynor (GWA). G Ward B took the doubles through Whittaker and Allsopp to gain the draw.

Cat B lost at home to G Ward A by 9 sets to 1 but then beat Barlestone B by the same 9-1 score line. Queen’s Mira collected a useful win over Cat H by 8 sets to 2.

In the Midland Veterans League Hinckley A competing in Division 2 currently sit one from bottom having played two matches , losing them both, firstly to Telford by 7 sets to 3 and then to Shrewsbury by 6 sets to 4. Meanwhile the Hinckley B team are faring much better in Division 4 winning one match against Derby B by 7 sets to 3.

Their match with Birmingham D resulted in a 5 all draw with Russ Pettitt and Andy Spring winning all their games. The B side currently sit in second spot in the table.

Congratula­tions to Matthew Halliday of Hastings High School and the George Ward Table Tennis Club for becoming Leicesters­hire Schools Under 13 Boys Champion at the weekend. His Club mate James Walker finishing third.
