A father and daughter duo from Hinckley will be taking on the London marathon this year in honour of Isla Tansey while raising money for the Children with Cancer UK charity.

Megan Rose Carlile and her dad Gary Carlile have accepted the challenge to run for the charity who are dedicated to raising money for research and providing care for children with cancer and their families.

The determined duo are also using the event to raise awareness for the campaign raised by youngster Isla ‘Smiler’, who sadly passed away from cancer last year leaving a monumental impact across the town and the world with her #Islastones mission.

“Once I heard about Isla’s story, it touched me, like it touched many people locally and nationally ,” explains Megan. “I was overwhelmed how inspirational her story was and how she bought the whole community together.”

Passionate about fundraising, Megan who is 19-years-old has raised thousands of pounds over the years for various charities including Matt’s Mission Charity, Hope Against Cancer and Beauty with a Purpose. At the age of five, she and her dad made a pact to take on the 26 mile feat and 14-years-later is now preparing herself for the challenge which will take place this April, she says: “Both me and my dad have never ran a marathon before but we have completed half marathons, this year we were offered a place to run for the Children With Cancer charity for which I am very honoured.

“We have both been training regularly and I have quickly realised that this has been the toughest challenge I’ve ever signed up for! Throughout these cold months it is difficult to motivate yourself to go out and run but I only have to think of the reason why I am running and it makes the training so much easier!”

Megan and Gary are hoping to raise £2,000 for the Children with Cancer UK charity and they are both hopeful to smash their target, Megan continued: “I am super nervous for the marathon and doubt myself every day as to whether I’ll complete it, but with the support of family, friends and everyone who has donated so far, it allows me to be more optimistic!

“It would mean so much to me if we were to reach our target as I know that cancer has had an impact on almost everyone and this charity is really close to my heart so raising money for this cause is really important to me.

“Despite the nerves, I am excited for this once in a lifetime opportunity and I am determined to try my best.”
