Evie picks up gold at cheerleading world championships
A TALENTED 14-YEAR-OLD from Elmesthorpe has seen her dreams come true after bagging a gold medal at a global cheerleading competition in Florida.
Young cheerleader Evie Schofield, who attends St Martin’s school in Stoke Golding, became a world champion when she competed in the Worlds Cheer competition with the Junior England squad earlier this year.
The impressive squad fought off tough competition from Japan and America to win at the International Cheerleading Union World Championships in Orlando, Florida.
Evie, along with the England squad, will now qualify for the elite division in 2020, competing at the highest level, alongside the United States.
The talented teen started cheerleading five to six years ago and began cheering with the Coventry Dynamite Cheerleaders three years ago.
Proud mum Bernie said: “Evie has put her heart and soul into the training program, often training up to 28 hours some weeks, forfeiting social gatherings, friends and family birthday celebrations, outings and many sleep overs.
“Being part of the teams and cheerleading has enriched her by gaining a deep understanding into commitment, determination, hard work, loyalty, satisfaction and forgiveness as a team player.
“The hard work and dedication she has shown has allowed a dream come true for her to compete alongside her American idols of 3 years ago.
“Evie has also had to learn how to deal with people’s ignorance towards cheerleading, not understanding the intensity, strength and skill of her sport, as most people think cheerleading is dancing with Pom Poms.
“Thankfully the Olympic Committee were present in Florida this year and positively considering entering cheerleading as an Olympic sport.”
Later this summer, Evie will appear on TV on BBC’s Blue Peter, who have invited the Junior Team England onto the show.
