French cafe Petite Chouette in town picks up Fairtrade award
Town cafe offers up some French classics using Fairtrade goods
A FRENCH style cafe in Hinckley has been named as the Hinckley and Bosworth Fairtrade Retailer of the Year.
Petite Chouette in Regent Street won the award, presented by Hinckley and Bosworth Fairtrade Forum, a group of volunteers who work to promote Fairtrade items in the area.
Members of the forum voted on which local retailer should win the award.
Mathew Hulbert, chair of the Forum, presented the certificate to Paul Lancaster who owns the cafe bar with his wife Alison.
Also present were other members of the forum and councillor Martin Cartwright, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s executive member for Climate Change, Licensing, Environmental Health and Rural Affairs.
He thanked Mr Lancaster for the support he and Alison give to the cause by using Fairtrade ingredients in the produce they sell.
Mr Lancaster said: “This was a bit of a surprise, I didn’t know this was happening. We’re really proud to receive the award.
“Both Alison and I try to source our ingredients as ethically as possible, in the business and at home.
“So, it’s really nice to be recognised for that.”
Mr Hulbert said: “We’re delighted to recognise Petite Chouette.
“Paul and Alison do a fantastic job in using Fairtrade ingredients in the drinks, cakes and so on that they sell.
“The forum thinks it’s really important to support local independent retailers who believe passionately in the need to use ethically sourced ingredients.
“It’s a great opportunity to remind residents that by buying items with the Fairtrade mark on them means more of the money they pay goes to the original farmer, grower or miner in the developing world.”
