PREVIEW: THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN (PG)
BASED on the bestselling novel by Garth Stein, The Art Of Racing In The Rain illustrates the bond between a man and his four-legged companion, who passionately believes that he will be reincarnated as a human racing car driver.
Golden retriever Enzo (voiced by Kevin Costner) is plucked from his litter by petrol-head Denny Swift (Milo Ventimiglia, pictured with Enzo), who feels the need for speed with a dog at his side.
Enzo is often taken to the racetrack and the dog thrills to the sights and smells of competition.
Denny excels on the track and one day, he falls under the spell of a young woman called Eve (Amanda Seyfried). They marry and raise a daughter, Zoe (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) with Enzo as the fourth member of the clan.
Trials on and off the racetrack put a strain on the marriage as Denny risks his life to chase glory behind the wheel. Eventually, Denny is pitted against Eve’s parents, (Martin Donovan and Kathy Baker), as he tries to hold his family together.
FAST & FURIOUS: HOBBS & SHAW (12A)
MI6 agent Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby) locates a stolen consignment of a chemical compound which will liquefy the internal organs of billions of innocent victims if released into the atmosphere.
Cyber-genetic assassin Brixton Lore (Idris Elba), attempts to steal the contagion and Hattie’s only option is to inject herself. She has 72 hours before micro-capsules in her bloodstream release Snowflake and trigger a global extinction.
Her brother, former British Special Forces operative Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), races to the rescue. Unfortunately for him, the CIA recruits his sparring partner, federal agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson, above), to track down Hattie.
The brutes begrudgingly join forces to protect Hattie from Brixton, who has history with Shaw.
Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw delivers all four elements of its title with maximum macho posturing and minimum narrative outlay.
THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 (U)
THIS computer-animated caper feathers its nest with an achingly predictable journey of self-discovery.
Residents of Bird Island and Pig
Island are locked in a war of attrition and pranks.
Red, pictured, (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), speedy livewire Chuck (Josh Gad) and self-combusting worrywart Bomb (Danny McBride) spearhead the birds’ efforts to stay one cluck ahead of the pigs’ rotund leader, Leonard (Bill Hader).
The frenemies are shocked to discover a third colony, the frozen wasteland of Eagle Island, where embittered ruler Zeta (Leslie Jones) and her daughter Debbie (Tiffany Haddish) are plotting to overthrow birds and pigs with a superweapon.
“We need to put our differences aside and work together,” Leonard implores the birds.
Consequently, Red assembles a crack team for a daring mission to Eagle Island.
