Cycle club makes the best of it

-

EARLIER this year Hinckley CRC faced the miserable prospect that there would be little chance of holding any events in 2019 due to the major road works taking place on the A5 around the Magna Park area.

Fortunately, the club was given a reprieve and allowed to run its usual Tuesday night time trials providing they all started at 6.30pm instead of the usual 7pm start. And so, after some uncertainty at the start of the season, events got underway with a decent turnout producing some notable results.

The following is a selection of personal bests achieved to date this year:April Tacey (Brother Fusion RT) 22:38 on 7th May

Tommy Burston

14th May

Alan Nicolson (Racehub) 21:56 on 14th May

Dave Elliott (Rugby Racing Team) 21:48 on 14th May (Racehub) 24:24 on

Paul Hirons (Stoney Stanton Velo) 26:07 on 21st May

Stuart Hughes (HCRC) 24:15 on 25th June

Simon Haywood (HCRC) & Gillian Surr (Nuneaton Tri Club) 2up 31:24 on 2nd July

Rod Weston (Racehub) 26:59 on 2nd July

Stephanie White (Nuneaton Tri Club) 29:56 on 2nd July

Tom Haywood

27:10 on 9th July

Matt Finch 26:25 on 16th July Emma Hill 26:05 on 16th July

Tim Hood 21:34 on 16th July Richard Jinks 24:58 on 16th July Blake Marvin 28:01 on 16th July Andy Melvin (Stoney Stanton 25:29 on 16th July

Harrison Tacey 21:57 on 16th July Rob Warrington 24:57 on 16th July Jeff Farmer (HCRC) 23:53 on 23rd July The fastest time produced this year on the club 10-mile time trials is 20:08 ridden (Rugby 2 Wheelers) Velo) by David Mead of Race Rapid on 2nd July.

There have been a number of juveniles/ juniors competing this year on the Tuesday night 10s course.

These include Jack Bosence of Welland Valley CC who recorded a personal best of 26:06 on 21st May, George Hunt who rode a 38:09 early in the season, Adam Taylor of Speedhub who rode a 29:36 on 9th July, Tom Dixon of Welland Valley CC who rode a 27:05 on 23rd July and our own Oliver Searle of HCRC who rode a personal best of 27:26 on 16th July.

The loss of the club’s 25-mile time trial course to roadworks meant that annual events such as the open 4up time trial had to find a new home.

A last-minute change of location to Long Itchington was a tall order to pull off, but the event organiser, Richard Gamble pulled out all the stops to make it a successful event with 27 teams taking part.

Team Bottrill was successful in taking both the men’s and the ladies team trophies, times were 49:32 and 1:01:18 respectively whereas Stoney Stanton Velo came in first for the mixed team with a time of 1:00:52. Proceeds from the 4up event went to FND Hope.

July saw the first major charity ride organised by Hinckley CRC in support of the Air Ambulance. 315 miles were covered by 12 riders over 3 days cycling from Hinckley to the Eifel Tower in Paris.

The epic ride took 20 hours in the saddle, 12,750 feet of climbing, an unplanned detour as they mistakenly veered off course and 3 wasp stings to boot! All riders arrived safely in Paris and sponsor money is still being collected for such a worthy cause.

The club’s next event is another twist of fate where the annual 25-mile time trial is being replaced by a club 2up 10-mile time trial on Sunday 11th August. For more details see the club’s website or Facebook page.
