THE King Richard III Visitor Centre is celebrating after being included in a list of the ultimate United Kingdom travel destinations.

Lonely Planet listed the Leicester attraction as one of the top places to visit in the UK.

Lonely Planet ranked the top 500 unmissable experiences and hidden gems across Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the first time in the ultimate UK travel hit-list.

The £4 million centre enables visitors to immerse themselves in the story of the last English king to die on the battlefield (of Bosworth), and the first to be DNA tested.

The centre also gives budding historians the chance to discover how the famous king rose to power, as well as learning the story of the young princes in the tower. Visitors can even play detective as they unravel an ancient medieval murder.

Visitors to the centre can even view the spot where King Richard III’s remains were eventually discovered, 500 years later.

The remains of Richard III were famously discovered in Leicester in 2012 in a story that was often called the “king under the car park”.

The visitor centre, which

was once a school building, has been built next to the car park under which the king’s remains were discovered.

Iain Gordon, director of the visitor centre, said: “This is brilliant news and we are delighted that the visitor centre has been included on Lonely Planet’s Ultimate United Kingdom Travel list. “We’ve been welcoming visitors for over five years now and still to be recognised by the experts and wider Lonely Planet community as a mustsee attraction is fantastic news for everyone involved in the visitor centre.”
