SHOP fronts and public spaces in Hinckley town centre are to be revamped as a large funding pot has been secured.

Vacant historic buildings will be bought “back to life” and the area’s cultural heritage will be promoted thanks to the major cash boost, council bosses have said.

The location was one of 69 places across the country chosen to benefit from a £95 million heritage fund to improve high streets and increase footfall.

Stuart Bray, leader of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Hinckley has been successful in winning substantial funding from Historic England’s High Streets

Zone.

“This will kick start a £2 million heritage-led regeneration scheme that’s set to sensitively revitalise Hinckley town centre over the next four years.

“Now we will be able to improve shop fronts, enhance public areas and bring vacant historic buildings back to life.

“This is fantastic news for residents and businesses.

“As well as the physical improvements that the High Streets Heritage Action Zone will bring, our project will also celebrate the town’s cultural heritage and unlock further investment in the town centre.”

The national investment will fund repair works to landmark buildings and restore shop fronts and facades. Heritage Action

It will also develop education projects and events to reposition historic buildings as community hubs at the heart of towns and villages.

Louise Brennan, Historic England regional director for the Midlands, said: “It’s fantastic news for the people and businesses of Hinckley that it will receive much-needed funding to help support its historic high streets.

“Historic England is looking forward to working with the local community and stakeholders on this exciting project, and we are hopeful for the future prospects of the area.”

£2 million from the fund has been allocated for the area around Leicester’s Clock Tower, with property owners and leaseholders invited to apply to the city council for a share out of the cash.
