Rutland Water Marathon challenge

-

CHARITY man Nathan Cheney has been in action again raising funds for good causes, taking part in the Rutland Water Marathon.

The 38-year-old from Hinckley is completing a year of challenges to raise cash for various groups.

He said the 26.2-mile run, which he did in aid of Mind, was the hardest challenge he has faced to date.

“A year ago, I started running a couch-to-5k programme, since then everything has building towards this day, but nothing can prepare you mentally for the challenge of running for that kind of distance, which is why I thought it apt that Mind was my chosen charity in this instance.

“I hit the wall at 14 miles, and again around 18 and was fortunate enough to meet an experienced runner in the last four miles or so that helped me get over the line.”

Nathan is nearing the end of his programme, having completed a wolf run, a 100km row, a 100-mile walk and a parachute jump.

He ran the wolf run in aid of Leukaemia UK, with the 10k assault course including 30 obstacles, including mudslides, monkey bars and plunges into ice-cold water.

He also made a 13,000ft parachute jump above Peterborough, to raise money for Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland.

“It’s been a tough year, but its great now to see the end in sight and be able to look back at what we’ve achieved,” he said.

His remaining challenges include a 100-mile cycle to the sea this month for the British Heart Foundation, Movember in November for UK Prostate Cancer awareness and a charity auction and dinner in December.

He is looking for donations for the final event, which will be held at the Green Rooms on December 6.

All the proceeds from the dinner will be split among the 11 charities supported throughout the year.
