-

GEORGE Ward D is currently top of the Table Tennis Division One league table having achieved two very good results in their latest matches, writes Mike Holt.

In their encounter with club team mates G Ward B, they put up an excellent performance to gain a well-earned 7 sets to 3 victory.

Edward Brown (GWD) lost in four games to Danny Whitaker (GWB) but then beat Richard Chesters (GWB) also in a four game set.

The star of the match, however, was young Ollie Wynne who was in outstanding form beating all his opponents in three straight games including a fine win over Whitaker.

Callum Dale (GWD) also collected two good wins.

In their next match they crushed Cat C by 9 sets to 1.

C Dale (GWD) was crowned man of the match with three fine wins. Colleagues Eileen Shaler and Edward Brown also won all their sets.

Some small consolation for Cat C was their win in the doubles when Robert Dale and Alex Westerby (both Cat C) won an exciting doubles 11-6 in the fifth.

G Ward A were also in good form over recent matches collecting a good away win at Queens Mira by 8 sets to 2.

Andy Spring (GWA) was in devastating form winning all three of his sets in three games.

Dan Hogan (Mira) fought hard losing a close game to Elliott Clarke (GWA) in four games before overcoming Leigh Morris (GWA) 11-9 in the fifth to claim a useful victory.

Their next match against Cat D resulted in a very good win by 9 sets to 1.

Morris (GWA) won his three sets in fine style with Spring (GWA) also claiming three wins.

Tony Nixon (Cat D) won their sole set overcoming Roger Hill (GWA).

Cat A defeated their own Cat D side by 10 sets to nil, with Rhys Emery claiming man of the match with three good victories.

In their next game they did not have things all their own way when a spirited GWB took them close.

Cat A raced into a 3 sets to 1 lead but the Barwell side pulled one back through Bob Whitaker who beat Gary Carr (Cat A).

The set of the night also involved Carr who took Danny Whitaker to five games before succumbing 7-11 to lose the set.

Cat A then closed out the match to run out winner by 6 sets to 4.

Queen’s Mira collected a useful win over Cat H when they won by 7 sets to 3 at the Desford venue.

Ian Heavey (Mira) won his three in some style. Last season champions Goons had an easy victory over Cat C winning by 10 sets to nil.

However, they found life much more difficult in their next match when G Ward H claimed a fine victory at Goons by 8 sets to 2 to rock the Champions.

New signing Sam Perry (GWH) shone for the visitors collecting a good maximum.

He was supported well by Adam Pettitt (GWH) who also won his three with Jon Jacom (GWH) collecting one victory.

For Goons both Harry White and Jason Woodfield won one game each.

The current table sees GWD top with GWA second, Cat A third and Goons in fourth spot.
