George Ward B pick up two good wins in table tennis league

GEORGE Ward B collected two good wins in their recent games in the Table Tennis League.

In their match with Cat D, they took a four sets to two lead and were looking comfortabl­e but Cat D fought back with two victories, firstly Colin Goodman (Cat D) took a surprise win over Danny Whitaker in an epic five game match, finally running out the victor 11-5 in the fifth game.

His team-mate Tony Nixon (CAT D) took a three straight game win over

Richard Chesters (GWB) to draw the scores level at four sets each before Bob Whitaker (GWB) steadied the ship collecting a good win over Eiz Eddin Al Katrib and then the Whittaker partnershi­p of father and son took the doubles to secure a 6 sets to 4 victory.

In their next game they had a comfortabl­e win away to Cat H, winning by 9 sets to 1.

Prescott (Cat H) collecting the home sides only win over Clive Stretton (GWB).

Goons continue their chase for the top with a good win over Cat H, with Harry White (Goons) being the player of the match.

They followed that with an 8 sets to 2 win over G Ward D. Goons did not have it all their own way however as no fewer than five sets went to five games and a further two went to four games. Eileen Shaler (GWD) defeated

Barry Robinson (Goons) and the ever improving Ollie Wynne (GWD) beat Kenny Obilaso. Man of the match was H White again.

Cat A beat their own B team by 10 sets to nil to keep up their challenge for the title.

Queens Mira overcame a spirted Cat C to run out winners by 7 sets to 3. Ian Heavey (Mira) claiming best player award.

G Ward A made light work of being a player short defeating Cat B by 7 sets to 3. Whilst the game between the big CAT’s D & C teams resulted in a 6 sets to 4 victory for Cat D.

In a very tight match the scores seesawed one way and then the other but at 3 sets all, Cat D upped their game to win the next three sets, to lead 6 sets to 3, before Cat C took the doubles to make it 6 sets to 4. Some really close scores, none more so that in the game between Eiz Eddin Al Katrib (D) and Alex Westerby (C) which went to Katrib 15-15 in the fourth game.
