Power to the people!
This week HDPP features pictures of Tom Towers, street celebrations and one or two other shots from the past which have been brought to their scanning sessions at St Mary’s Church
WELCOME TO COLUMN BY PAUL AND SUE OF HINCKLEY DISTRICT PAST AND PRESENT
THIS week we have a feature all about people, maybe some of them you knew or remember.
HDPP member Charlie Upton sent us a couple of pictures of Tom Towers with some of the boys standing by the door to the boys club on Stoke Road. Mr Upton also sent us an official invite that he had to the opening of the boys club (see our earlier editions for pictures).
He included some candid snaps of the Burleigh Road VE Day street party and the 1947 Royal Wedding street party.
We thought we would continue this theme by sharing a couple of the Eskdale Road Coronation party.
The weather was not as kind as they would have like so they were made comfortable in the garage of Marilyn Jones’s father’s garage.
Check out a super picture of the Merevale Avenue street party in full swing as well.
A picture we have featured before is Highfields Road Street party, back in the day when the roads were so much quieter!
Talking of quieter roads how about this lovely picture of Dennis Perkins and his mates sitting in the middle of Princess
Street (as it was then) off
Queens Road.
In the late 1950s the land belonging to Thornycroft House was sold off and developed, that’s how Princess Road became a through road with newer bungalows and houses being built in the 1960s.
Finally a pram race in Earl Shilton pictured in 1961 and features Michael Moore, Derek Baker, the late Jim Lord, Ian Baker and Warwick Brown.
Remember we love your old pictures.
We are scanning in St Mary’s Church every third Saturday of the month 10-12pm.
