Rugby run out winners

-

HINCKLEY A were at home to Rugby ladies this week who currently sit just above them in the league table. Hinckley were missing their Centre Bex Oldfield this week due to injury so WD Jess Rainbow moved to the C position and B team’s Lucy Marsden stepped in as WD. Rugby got off to a good start winning the first quarter 10-7.

After the first quarter there were changes in the Hinckley team and Emily Harrison stepped in as GA for Holly Hemsley. Rugby were too strong for Hinckley and they won the second and third quarters. For the final quarter there was another change with Jess Rainbow going back to WD and B teams Lucy Masser coming on at Centre. Hinckley won the final quarter scoring more goals than Rugby thanks to the brilliant defence of Emma Draycott and Kate Chamberlain. The final score ended with the win for Rugby 47-37.

On the penultimate match before Christmas, Hinckley B were away at Alvis.

In the mid table clash, it was a tight start with every goal counting. Hinckley were off to a good start, comfortably getting the ball down the court in to the shooters meaning Hinckley B were 3 goals in the lead after the first quarter. The determination continued from both teams into the second quarter making all positions feeling the pressure to do well. Alvis took the lead going in to half time by 2 goals.

The third quarter continued to see the battle between both teams as Hinckley defence worked hard stopping Avis shooters getting the goals and getting the ball to the mid court players in to the shooting circle. Hinckley’s efforts were not reflected in the score as the third quarter ended with Alvis being 3 goals ahead. During the fourth quarter, Hinckley let a close game slip away. Alvis made vital interceptions which they used to their advantage widening the gap. The final score was 54-42.

Hinckley C’s started very strongly against Earlsdon Highway, leading 10-6 after the first quarter. The team worked as a unit and played a slow, possession based game trying to limit turnovers and interceptions from the opposition.

Going into half time, the away side were leading 20-15. In the second half, accurate shots from Hinckley’s shooters closed the gap to 2 goals, with Earlsdon Highway leading 27-25. In the final quarter, accurate shooting and strong defence from the opposition proved too much for Hinckley and the result was 34-39. Overall a strong match with lots of positives to take forward, well done to Centre Sue Ley for getting player of the match.

Hinckley D played Alvis D away and taking on board some points from last weeks game made great progress this week in creating space on court. The first quarter both teams were evenly matched with Hinckley having a nervous start allowing Alvis to go ahead, but they brought it back and finished the quarter drawing 9 all.

The rest of the match saw Hinckley’s defence working hard intercepting balls and then safely bringing the ball down the court, linking with the attack and feeding into the shooting circle.

Both shooters worked well together, with many accurate long range shots from Anna Poulsen and nifty short range shots from Lucy Ibbetson, Hinckley took the lead and continued to increase in each quarter.

In the last 3 minutes of the game GA Lucy took a fall injuring her elbow, fortunately a sub was on hand and Hinckley went on to score several more goals in the last few minutes to storm ahead and won the match 48-32. Overall it was a great team performance with everyone working together bringing positive comments and play, a thoroughly enjoyable game. Player of the match went to Dasia playing WD for the second week running.
