Bennett Brothers and Bolesworth’s factories

We also have some pictures from Stoney Stanton

-

HERE at HDPP we continually to be amazed at some of the wonderful pictures that appear at our monthly scanning sessions which we hold at St Mary’s Church every third Saturday morning from 10am until noon.

Please bring along any pictures you may have that you think could be of interest. They could be of work or school friends of the past, town events or gatherings. Remember memories are precious so share them and let them live on longer.

This time Jane Green came to see us and brought some super pictures that were taken at Bennett Brothers factory that was once on Southfield Road.

She thinks the pictures were taken for a promotion brochure. We have pictures showing the BBC interviewing one of the mechanics in the knitting plant along with one of the many knitters inspecting his work off the machines.

Another splendid picture shows the corner of Station Road and Southfield Road. Today the Station View Surgery stands here.

There is a splendid shot from the air looking down on the factory. It also shows the railways station and the lovely station garden neatly laid out. The pictures of the ladies at their machines we do not have any names but if you know who they are please get in touch with us at Hinckley District Past and Present.

A splendid picture of the management and factory staff on a day trip is also included. Maybe you recognise somebody pictured? Dates for most of these pictures are late 40s or early 50s.

Another couple of pictures that were brought to us by Glenda Halliwell were taken at Arthur Bolesworth’s factory that was on Mill Hill.

This would later become part of Smallshaws Knitwear. Love how the whole factory workforce are all pictured outside with the management. Maybe you recognise some of those pictured?

Joy Merrick supplied the final four pictures relating to Stoney Stanton. Great to see a picture of the old Stoney Stanton Working Men’s Club before the quarry was filled in behind it.

We also have a picture taken at Stoney Stanton school with the little ones all assembled with their lovely little hats on and the boys looking like butter would not melt!

The building is the infant school in Hinckley Road opposite the club that is now the doctors surgery. Joy’s mum Mary Hunt is pictured here along with Ellen Stevens.

We also include a picture of Stoney Stanton Silver Band taken in 1932.

Finally our last picture is the Leicestershire 17th Foot. Later to become part of the Leicester Tigers.
