Back in business with by broadband

- WITH FORMER REPORTER MITCH IRVING CONTACT HIM ON MIRVING2734@GMAIL.COM

In the words of Churchill to Parliament on resumption after the war, “As I was saying.”

Apologies for my absence in recent weeks which was down to problems after I changed broadband suppliers for the first time after my elder stepson set it up when living with me and his mother some years ago.

I’m so ignorant on techno matters, it’s a wonder I didn’t think broadband was a musical group for women of dubious reputation!

Hey ho, on with the motley once we are back in business now that the B word has been agreed in principle but not entirely and passed not with a bong but a whimper.

Hook handyre

Young people are so thoughtful! I’ve seen a number with a white curtain hook in one ear just in case they meet someone who needs help with home furnishing!

Luggage lost?

Why does Michael Portillo carry no cases on his TV rail journeys?

We see him stepping off one train without any luggage and later getting on another without so much as an overnight bag for his colourful wardrobe items and toilet bag.

Another mystery is how, on occasions, he apparently leaves his trusty Bradshaws on one service but it is restored to him as he continues his journey. Perhaps the cameraman with whom he carries on one way conversations in carriages looks after him.

Television treasures There is a lot of talk at the moment about the TV licence fee which funds the BBC but I’ve discovered two programmes which I wouldn’t mind continuing to stump up for.

The first is a real treasure – Yorkshire Walks on BBC2 on Wednesday evenings. In contrast to the shouty, hyped up atmosphere that seems to be taking over most shows, this is an half hour of solitude and calm.

With no music, the only sounds are the natural ones, bird songs, sheep bleating or waves breaking on the shore, for example, to accompany Shanaz Gulmar’s commentary as she observes the ordinary things in life like butterflies on the path she is walking or cereal crops rustling in a breeze.

The pity is that it is only four programmes and the last one is tonight (Wednesday 15th) and I look forward to her wearing something different to what she wore in the first three.

The other programme and I suspect I might be on my own in this is the game show “First And Last” compered by Jason Manford on Saturday nights.

All right it’s daft, even stupid but it’s fun and does not take itself seriously, offering a chance to wind down after some of the hype earlier. I can’t see it making a second series but I for one shall be sorry as I see Danny Dyer will be driving us up The Wall again soon!

Fated family

Before my hiatus I was commenting on how things start in Earnest but no one knows where it is and no progress report is given.

It is a similar situation with a family who certainly seem fated despite having a double barrelled title the Notter-Reelnayms.

Just think how many times TV news journalists interview women with unfortunate or tragic experiences and say just Jane, Charlotte or whatever and add Notter-Reelnaym.

Surely something should be done for them!
