A RUNNER from Hinckley is taking on the London Marathon to raise money for a charity that supports people with the long-term illness that his uncle has.

Andy Horan, 40, is running the course around the capital in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, as his uncle Phil has lived with the disease for over 20 years.

Phil now constantly uses a wheelchair and last year had to have an extension built on his house, to accommodate a wash room and a hospital bed for him.

Mr Horan said on his Just Giving page set up for the cause: “Uncle Phil is a huge inspiration to me and to all those around him.

“He has dealt with this life changing and debilitating disease with such courage sheer determination.

“It is a huge honour to be able to run the marathon for uncle Phil and to raise funds for this charity.”

Now able to complete half marathons, Mr Horan will be one of several runners doing the marathon in aid of the MS Society, in late April.

The self-confessed adrenaline junkie has previously done a skydive, climbed Snowdon, bungee jumped 160 feet and completed several wolf runs for charities.

Mr Horan has two daughters, aged nine and six, and he uses Phil as a role model to inspire them. and

He said: “It’s that ‘don’t give up’ factor. We all have our bad days - I use it as an example to my young daughter, to say he doesn’t give up and let things get him down.”

He said his uncle was “really chuffed and proud” to hear that he would be taking part in the race. Participants in the marathon pledge to raise at least £2,000 towards their charity.

Mr Horan and his wife have organised a fashion show and clothes sale at St John’s Church in Hinckley to raise funds for the good cause.

Rails of discounted and high street stock along with French and Italian designer items will be available to purchase, including sizes 8 to 30.

Payment can be made in cash or with debit or credit card.

Refreshments and cakes will be available will also be on offer, as well as a charity stall, tombola and raffle.

The event is on March 28 at 7pm, with the fashion show at 7.45pm.
