Carnival fun in the sun, and rain, from years ago

-

THIS week we thought we would feature some carnival pictures over the years.

Thanks to The Hinckley Times and through people who have brought their own pictures for us to our scanning sessions. We have simply done a lucky dip into the HDPP archive and these are what came out!

From its early beginnings as Hinckley Hospital Carnival, it was held to raise funds for the town hospital although it ceased during the war years and was not resurrected until 1961.

The pictures taken in Derby Road 1961 shows Hinckley Methodist Church youth club that was based in Stockwell Head. These pictures were sent to HDPP by Michael Robinson of Mount Road.

Everyone of a certain age will recall the friendly rivalry between all the local factories in the carnival.

Sadly the last carnival held just a few short years ago only managed around six floats. Although there is no plans for any future carnivals, it’s good that the town does hold lots of events through the year hosted by either Hinckley BID and their splendid Soapbox Derby, Snap Dragon, Classic Car Show or Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and their Feast Hinckley, Bands in the Mead etc.

So there is still plenty on most weekend through the summer. So Maybe the carnival will now simply be a thing of the past that we can look back on with stories to tell the upcoming generation.
