A QUESTION OF FAITH

-

With Jessica Harrison, manager of The Vine Bookshop and Cafe

THURSDAY 5th March is World Book Day. If you have primary school aged children you will be familiar with the annual day of dressing your child up as a book character and being given the £1 token to buy a special World Book Day book. The day, however is not just for children but for everyone, to remind those of us who perhaps haven’t bought a book or read a book for a while, the importance of the written word. Christians are very aware of the power of the written word as they believe that God speaks to them through the Bible. There is also a host of Christian literature to help us understand what is written in the Bible and to guide us and inspire us. Hinckley is very fortunate in that it still has a “bricks and mortar” Christian bookshop – The Vine, which is tucked away behind the United Reformed Church on The Borough. Having The Vine means books can be browsed and handled before choosing what to buy. The Vine has a wide range of Christian books from fiction, biography, gift books, devotional books and covers subjects such as mental health, grief, prayer and of course, plenty of Bibles (there are many to choose from). There is a wide range of children’s books including Bibles, story books and books of prayers. This World Book Day we will have a range of books for just £1.00 each for both adults and children – available while stocks last – there are some great bargains to be had (unfortunately we are unable to accept the World Book Day tokens). On World Book Day this year we are celebrating by inviting children’s author Amy Scott Robinson into the shop. Amy writes for children aged 6-9, her stories are about three friends and a gargoyle named Gladstone who comes to life and has adventures with his new friends. The books engage with themes of friendship, community, history and faith. During her visit Amy will be reading from her books, giving a talk, with the aid of her Gargoyle puppet, and signing copies of her books. There are three titles in the “Gladstone the Gargoyle” series and they are priced at £6.99. If you have children or grandchildren in that age range who would be interested in meeting an author and learning more about these books please feel free to attend at 3.30pm on Thursday 5th March. As The Vine is also a coffee shop there will be hot and cold drinks, cakes and other snacks available. We’d love to see you at this event or anytime – you’ll always have a warm welcome.
