Closure order secured on flat after antisocial behaviour

A closure order has been granted for a council flat in Hinckley after people living nearby raised repeated concerns about antisocial behaviour and drug offences taking place at the property.

It is the first such order to be secured by the borough council during the current coronavirus lockdown, with the court hearing taking place over the phone on Wednesday 22 April.

Officers from Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s Endeavour Team took action to secure a three-month closure order after the occupiers ignored repeated advice and warnings, and continued to allow people to cause nuisance and annoyance - including drug misuse and threatening behaviour - to others living nearby.

The closure order now means that no one is allowed to enter the property, other than those that habitually live at the address. Anyone breaching the order could be arrested and, if found guilty, could face a punishment of up to 51 weeks in prison and/or an unlimited fine.

Safety at the borough council said: “This order will send a clear message that drug use and antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated and together with our partners in Endeavour, we will continue to use all legal remedies to protect our communities during this pandemic.”

Head of Housing at the borough council, Madeline Shellard said: “Unfortunately, over recent weeks the Covid-19 pandemic has led to an increase in nuisance and anti-social behaviour in some parts of our borough.

“Anti-social behaviour can have devastating consequences for people and communities, and it can be particularly distressing for people during a time when the government is asking residents to stay at home, which can mean that victims and complaints can feel like they have little escape.

“The Endeavour team recognises this is and is committed to ensuring that residents within our borough do not have to suffer in silence.”
