Two more patients die in Hinckley

-

TWO more coronavirus patients have died at Leicester’s hospitals.

Both were in their 90s and died after testing positive for Covid-19.

The latest announcement means that 239 patients being treated at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital or Glenfield Hospital have now died after being found to have the virus.

A spokesperson for University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust said: “Sadly, we can confirm that 239 patients being cared for at our hospitals, and who had tested positive for Covid-19, have died.

“Two of those deaths have been announced today (May 4).

“The patients were in their 90s.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the patients at this very difficult and distressing time.”

A further 223 fatalities were reported in the 24 hours up to Monday afternoon, bringing the total number of patients that have died in UK hospitals to 24,338.

It was also announced last week that two more patients had died at Hinckley and Bosworth Community Hospital.

On 23 April a male patient who was in his seventies, and had underlying health conditions, died.

And on April 28 a female patient in her late eighties with underlying health conditions died.

On Monday, England reported 204 new deaths, Scotland had five and Wales recorded 14.

The figures represent the lowest number of hospital deaths since the end of March.

The overall death toll, including deaths in care homes, at home or in community settings is approaching 30,000. It was also revealed that the Nightingale Hospital in London is expected to be placed on stand-by in the next few days.

The 4,000-bed temporary hospital, which opened on April 3, will be kept in place so it could resume operations again if needed.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to address the nation on Sunday night and set out his plan for lifting the lockdown.

The PM said last week that the country is now “past the peak” but warned that measures would not be lifted until the Government could ensure a second peak would not overwhelm the NHS.

A ban on hot desking, different shift patterns and PPE are some of the measures being proposed to help get people back to work.
