Bags of dog poo dumped where bin used to be

Council appeals for people to help out during the crisis

A PET owner has warned that people are ignoring signs and dumping bags of dog poo at a nature spot outside Burbage.

Richard Vanags took pictures of bags that had been left at Burbage Common, one of which shows about 10 bags piled up beneath a sign asking walkers to take their litter and dog waste them.

The ugly heap was left where a bin was once in service, near the woods.

Many litter bins across the borough have been taken out of service because of council shortages, but there are still bins available in the common’s car park, which are regularly emptied.

Richard said: “If you go to the effort to pick up your dog’s mess, why not take it to a bin?

“I have seen someone on the way back to their car 300 yards with from the car park just dump a bag on the floor. No-one is collecting the bags and they will be there for how long, making the area stink and unhealthy.”

Richard lives very near the common and takes his dog for a walk there every day.

He said: “At this time, with all that’s going on, it’s just not on, for others who have to walk past it every day.

“It’s not fair on the kids and dogs that have to go past it. It’s just lazy.”

Council officers urged people to take their rubbish home.

Mike Wardle, a regular walker at the common who also does litter-picking there, previously wrote to the council about the issue.

He said: “The filthy habit of poo bags being discarded into hedges, trees and undergrowth is now more prevalent and most are visible but unretrievable and therefore detract far greater than any amount of bins put there in order to encourage better behaviour.”

One resident also found several bags of dog poo left beneath a bin in Burbage, on the corner of Boyslade Road and Sketchley Road.

A spokeswoman for the authority said previously: “Some residents have been leaving litter in the street at sites where bins have been removed which is unpleasant for others.

“We urge everyone to please be responsible with their litter and take it home with them until we are able to return to our usual service.”
