Charity in desperate need of donations
Surge in demand for charity items leads to plea from bosses
A CHARITY that provides homeware and furniture to the vulnerable is in desperate need of donations.
Work-Link in Hinckley delivers items to help people as they move into accommodation, including those who were previously homeless or people coming out of domestic abuse.
There has been a surge in demand during the coronavirus lockdown as people have been moved out of hostels and hotels into temporary accommodation.
Project manager
Mandy
Quinn said: “We are fast running out of beds, cookers, microwaves, fridges and kitchen-based items that we make into starter packs such as plates, cutlery, utensils and pans.
“We are having to buy in new which is not cost effective and draining the charity of vital resources.
“So, we are appealing to the general public and any businesses such as hotels and restaurants for help.
“Anyone who has any of these items spare, please donate them and we can then distribute them to those in need.”
The charity launched in 1987 as a Hinckley Volunteer Centre initiative and it has a shop on The Borough and a warehouse on Jacknell Road.
The group also upcycles furniture before selling it on or giving it away to those in need.
Most of the team are on furlough and they are also limited in how quickly they can deliver items.
Before the pandemic, if you donated a bed it could go to the person who needed it on the same day, but now it has to be quarantined for at least 72 hours.
Ms Quinn said: “There’s a lot of people out there, especially who have been homeless, who desperately need items.”
Donations can be collected for free and those who pick them up will comply with social distancing.
