Summer reading challenge launched by county libraries

-

A SUMMER reading challenge for youngsters is to go virtual this year.

The annual event by Leicestershire Libraries challenges children to read six or more books of their choice over the holidays, with collectable incentives and rewards.

Each youngster who completes the challenge also gets a certificate.

This year the event has launched earlier than usual to support parents and carers with children already at home.

The theme for the challenge is Silly Squad – a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter, featuring bespoke artwork from awardwinning children’s author and illustrator, Laura Ellen Anderson.

Author Jacqueline Wilson, ambassador for the Summer Reading Challenge, said: “I feel the Summer Reading Challenge is extra important this year.

“How sensible to have a Silly theme. We’ve all had to deal with serious and scary issues, so it’s time for a bit of fun.

“There are so many comical and crazy children’s books to cheer us all up. Let’s get reading and get happy.”

Children can set their own book target and it can be changed as the challenge progresses.

The challenge website is free to access, with resources for children to explore the characters, watch videos, take quizzes and more.

Thousands of titles are available for free as e-books and e-audiobooks on Borrowbox, available to all library members.
