Two districts in the county are in red zone for infections

CORONAVIRUS infection rates in two Leicestershire districts are significantly higher than the average rate elsewhere in England.

Both Oadby and Wigston and Blaby are in the red zone when it comes to infection rate per 100,000 people.

But while Oadby and Wigston remains in the extended Leicester lockdown, Blaby was released last weekend when Health Secretary Matt Hancock relaxed restrictions outside of the city.

Rates in Hinckley and Bosworth, Charnwood and Harborough are within similar range while North West Leicestershire and Melton are both said to be significantly lower.

Charnwood, which also saw areas included within the original lockdown zone released recently, has the highest number of cumulative cases in the county overall.

The data is included in a Leicestershire County Council report which uses Public Health England figures collated since the start of the pandemic and July 18.

A quarter of the county’s 20 areas that have 50 or more cases are in Oadby and Wigston, with Oadby North & East having the highest number of cases overall - 135.

The report also reveals the areas that have seen the biggest increase in cases in the last two weeks.

Test results in both pillar one tests taken in hospitals or care settings - and pillar two - community testing settings - show that 190 cases were diagnosed in the county in the fortnight before July 18.

Some 50 of those were in Oadby and Wigston, broken down to Middle Super Output Areas, 20 were in Oadby South and West, with 15 each in Wigston North and Oadby North and East. The same three areas also recorded the highest infection rates in the fortnight before July 18.

A review of Leicester’s lockdown is expected this weekend.

TWENTY Leicestershire areas now have 50 or more confirmed cases of coronavirus.

Latest weekly data shows the areas where the number of cases has reached 50 or above since the start of the pandemic. A quarter of the areas included are within the Oadby and Wigston lockdown zone. Restrictions still remain in the area and will be reviewed by August 1.

The data shows the Middle Super Output Areas (MSOA) - a measure used to report statistics in areas that have an average population of 7,200 - that have had the highest number of cases.

There are 87 MSOAs in Leicestershire in total.

Data included in the county council report put together using Public Health England figures also shows the areas with the highest infection rate per 100,000 population. The areas are plotted on a graph without specific rates but against a chart marking 500 and 1,000 cases.

Wigston Town has the highest infection rate with more than 1,000. Hinckley central’s rate is also more than 1,000. Thurmaston, Oadby South & West, Wigston North, Oadby North & East, Birstall Wanlip & Riverside, Houghton, Thurnby & Scraptoft, Braunstone Town and Loughborough Garendon all have a rate higher than 750. Syston East, Thorpe Astley, South Wigston, Shepshed East, Whetstone, Burbage St Catherines, Market Harborough Central, Ashby de la Zouch South, Desford & Newbold Verdon and Kirby Muxloe & Thurlaston all have rates higher than 500.
