Make sure you are registered to vote says borough council

THE borough council is encouraging its residents to make sure they’re registered to vote by responding to the annual canvass.

During the annual canvass, the borough council contacts every household in the borough to make sure the details it holds about residents on the electoral register are correct.

As well as confirming the details of people eligible to vote, the electoral register is also an important source for credit reference agencies. People not listed on the electoral register often find it very difficult to obtain credit.

The canvass process has changed this year in order to minimise the need for doorstep visits during the current health crisis. In line with the Government’s canvass reform programme, the council will be using data and electronic communication, such as email and telephone calls, to contact residents as well as traditionally posted letters.

Residents are asked to be ready for an email, phone call or letter from the council, asking them to check on those registered and inform the council of any changes.

Bill Cullen, Chief Executive at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, said: “I am encouraging everyone eligible to vote in

Hinckley and Bosworth, and particularly residents who have recently moved and young people aged 16 and 17, to follow the instructions from the elections team to make sure everyone is able to have a say in future elections. If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear in the messages we send.”
