Market Place in focus this week

Popular history group helps to raise thousands for good causes each year and streams live online twice a week

THIS week we take a look back at the Market Place and how it has altered over time. The first market was around 1311 but chances are there was a market in the town much earlier.

Although today the market stretches up Castle Street, many will remember when the Market Place was crammed with stalls from all over the area. In its heyday the market stretched from the corner of The Borough’s junction with Stockwell Head to almost outside the old main post office in Station Road as well as from the edge of The Borough with Regent Street in front of the White Hart pub. Today the closed Yorkshire Bank and Clarence buildings stand here.

We particularly like the picture of the children at the bottom of Castle Street by Penton’s Hardware store.

This would later become Parsons & Sherwin whose premises would be on Station Road for many years.

We also show how the corner of Station Road and Market Place once looked before the what is now HSBC bank was built in the 1890s.

It is a sad picture of the The George Inn being knocked down in 1959 and we feature the present day building just after opening early 1960s.
