Six of the best for LRFC

-

IT WAS six of the best for Leicester Road FC on Saturday when they beat Coventry Copswood 6-0.

Leicester Road started the game against their Coventry visitors with the sole aim of making a statement of intent as they looked for their third win on the spin.

After silencing the outside betting specialists by beating Studley in midweek, next up were a much changed Coventry Copswood.

Straight from the kick-off Leicester Road went immediately on the offensive with “hot shot” Matty Langham hitting the post with a header after just 3 mins. Then 2 mins later Liam Read forced the Copswood goalkeeper into rushing his attempted clearance of a back pass resulting in him missing ball completely and in doing so providing a simple tap-in into an empty net after 5 mins to put Leicester Road 1-0 up.

Liam Read who had been a constant threat to Copswood then pounced onto a perfectly weighted through ball and rounded the keeper before drilling the ball past the two defenders trying to guard their goal line to make it 2-0 after 14 mins.

Callum Earls making his first start of the season then took off on a forward run beating the Copswood right back and with only the goalkeeper to beat fired straight into his arms. Leicester Road continued on the offensive this time Liam Read firing straight at the Copswood keeper which prevented him from scoring a hat-trick in the first 30 mins.

Totally against the run of play, Copswood found themselves in an attacking position. The Copswood number 11 found himself free and opted to shoot and although the ball was heading straight into the top left hand corner, Will Highlands managed to tip it over the bar to produce a brilliant save.

Two-minutes later Matty Langham received the ball into his feedtwith his back to goal and he diligently forced the ball over the line to make it 3-0.

Liam Read then completed his hattrick after 43 mins and Leicester Road ended the half completely on top.

With the game already well in favour of Leicester Road Sam Munton was brought on for Matty Langham to give him a well earned rest after 60 mins. Sam Munton immediately made an impact with some neat footwork forcing the ball behind the Copswood defence and panicking them in rash decisions.

Leicester Road continued to dictate the game, Callum Earls fired one of his showpiece diagonal balls from inside his own half to release Jarrod Acton. He worked his way down the right flank before crossing for Simon Alcott to connect by stretching full length which totally wrong footed the Copswood keeper to make it 5-0 after 73 mins.

Dom Brennan received the ball on the edge of the box and went down the right beating two Copswood defenders before being hauled down and winning a penalty. Brennan picked himself up and dusted himself down and took the penalty himself sending the Copswood keeper the wrong way to make it 6-0.

Coventry Copswood had no answer to Leicester Road as Neil Lyne ensured his team’s performance made a clear statement of intent to the rest of the league.
