Real impact of Brexit has only just started

-

I can’t decide if your letter writer’s latest Brexit rant-a-thon (Jan 13) is a celebratory delirious delusion, or if it is meant as a bit of a joke or bait for EU nationals and the 48 per cent of people like myself who voted to remain in the EU in 2016, and have not changed their minds.

The rhetoric is getting more extreme and detached from reality, but also a bit tired now we have left the EU. Why not mention Churchill, Hitler, Germany again, with some doomed EU/Soviet Union comparison thrown into the mix for good measure? Oh, you did.

“We have our country and democracy back” you said. We always had our country and more independence that you care to admit. We have lost our European rights and identity thanks to your 52 per cent. We now have a poor version of our previous EU trade arrangement, with fewer opportunities to live and work in Europe and no more democratic representation within the EU, who are still our nearest neighbours.

Meanwhile, the English democratic process is a sham, with effectively two national political parties that suffer from infighting which would be better solved by splitting them up into smaller parties and giving us a decent choice at an election.

Since January 1, the fishing industry struggles to sell UK fish in European markets because of delays at borders. Leading supermarket chains are warning ministers of food shortages because of new border rules and bureaucracy (especially Northern Ireland). Small companies that thrived in the EU single market are now struggling to export into Europe because of the extra costs.

Despite Covid (which the government should be concentrating on), you got your Brexit. The real impact of Brexit is only just appearing, good or bad. You may chose to hear what you want to believe but opinions are not facts.
