Two good causes benefit from society cash

-

TWO Leicestershire charities have benefited from a donation made by a local building society.

The Earl Shilton Building Society made the donations from votes cast at its recent annual general meeting (AGM).

For each valid AGM vote, 40p was eligible for donation, and the member selected which of the two charities would receive the donation by using an AGM voting form.

This year’s AGM took place virtually due to coronavirus restrictions on Wednesday, July 14. The two charities nominated were Action Homeless and Heart Link.

Action Homeless is a Leicesterbased charity dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by homelessness and has been supporting individuals and families for the past 40 years.

Visitors to the charity’s centres are given a broad range of services, while the team of staff and volunteers work to ensure that people leave with a place to call home as well as the skills and resources to maintain independence.

James Riviere of Action Homeless said: “We really appreciate the continued support of esbs and its members.

“All donations are spent directly on supporting people affected by homelessness in Leicester and Leicestershire, so every vote for our charity at the esbs AGM is sure to help change the lives of people in the city and county.” Heart Link was established in 1981 as a support group for parents and families who had a child suffering from a heart defect.

They are committed to improving facilities for their young patients, their families and providing valuable medical equipment at Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital.

Their contributions to Glenfield Hospital include a specialised playroom, a helipad, and innovative technology.

Chris Rigby, Heart Link Secretary, said: “All of our activities, especially providing much-needed medical technology, take a great deal of fundraising, so we are immensely grateful for all donations.” Voting has generated £205 for Action Homeless and £295 for Heart Link after esbs increased the total donation to £500.

Paul Tilley, Chief Executive of esbs, said: “We are delighted to be supporting two worthwhile causes through our AGM this year.

“Both charities assist people in unfortunate circumstances, and our AGM is a great opportunity to make a difference and support two different types of vital work.

“The donation scheme is a popular feature of our AGM each year, and we encourage members to participate in it and make their votes really count.”
