All talk and no action on speeding

-

So the speeding charade continues. When one of our eminent Hinckley county councillors declared there are “positive plans” to deal with the issue, I went to LCC to ask them what they are.

Surprise, surprise, they did not know what I was taking about, meaning there actually aren’t any. I went back to said gentleman for clarification, but cannot extract a response.

It seems that the only plans are to continue talking about the problem, rather than doing anything to solve it - endless meetings, no decisive action. Its not as if the problem or the available remedies are new. There is plenty of local evidence to show what works and what doesn’t, so why is the can continually being kicked down the road?

What we need first is a clear statement of intent from the authorities based on zero tolerance. Then an overall and specific objective (e.g. to reduce the level of speeding to 10% over the next 2 years), then a strategy describing their approach and how they will monitor progress.

They will say there is limited funding, but that is a separate issue and does not stop them at least formulating a real plan. What is pretty obvious is that there is no point wasting money for the sake of it on schemes that deliver little or no benefit as has been the case in the past.

There are as always political and administrative barriers, but the only way to remove them is to tackle them aggressively head-on rather than just sending an occasional polite letter and trying to work around them. ALL our local representatives (borough & county councillors, PCC & MP) have pledged their support, but none of them is prepared to take the lead and the positive steps needed to make true progress.

If they feel they are not up to the job, perhaps they should tell us and stop falsely raising our expectations.

LCC will not have learnt any lessons from past failures and at the next elections when the question comes up again they will list what they have spent, NOT what success they have achieved.
