DR Luke Evans MP is urging bargain hunters, donors and willing volunteers to support the Hinckley branch of Cancer Research UK.

During a visit to the Castle Street charity shop, Dr Evans met the team and manager Alison Davies.

As well as needing donations to ensure the branch remains wellstocked, the team is looking for volunteers.

Dr Evans said: “It was great to go down and meet Alison, along with the rest of the team, at our local branch of Cancer Research UK.

“The branch is dependent on donations from the public, as well as volunteers giving up their time. If you’ve got a couple of hours to spare each week, why not consider helping out? It’s a great chance to meet new people or develop new skills.

“If you are due to have a clear-out and have items which could go to a new home, do keep Cancer Research UK in mind.

“The money raised helps to fund vital work.”

Dr Evans was told of the impact of the pandemic on the charity and was pleased to learn the store is bouncing back, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the support of Hinckley shoppers.

The shop accepts men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, accessories, jewellery, homeware, linens, books, CDs and DVDs, and some electrical items.

In 2020/21, Cancer Research UK raised £582 million, which helps to support work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, including £48 million from trading activities, made possible by the revenue from hundreds of branches across the country.

As well as donations and volunteering, people can also support Cancer Research UK by organising fund-raising or taking part in events such as Race for Life.

Alison said: “We’re extremely grateful to Dr Luke Evans for volunteering his time to visit our shop and thank him for his support.

“The shop is on the lookout for volunteers who can join the fight against cancer by helping out in-store. There are a variety of roles available, from serving customers to dressing windows.

“Many of our volunteers work just one morning or afternoon a week, or sometimes a midday shift to help over the busy lunchtime period. A few hours can make a huge difference.

“No matter how much time a person can give or what their experience, we are urging people to get in touch.”

To volunteer, visit the website or phone 01455 251 340.
