Desford secure welcome 4-2 win over Blaby & Whetstone

-

IN THE Everards Brewery Premier Division, Thurnby Rangers remain top, but had a scare when Jamie Simons gave Magna 73 the lead in the first half at Countesthorpe on Saturday. Rangers, however, pulled it around, firstly with an equaliser from Shaun Barber, before Carl Benson came off the bench to score twice and seal a 3-1 win.

Rugby Borough eventually maintained their 100% record, but only after having an even bigger scare at home to ProChance Football Academy.

ProChance were 2-0 up after 25 minutes but managed to secure a 4-2 win as ProChance ran out of steam in the later stages.

Meanwhile, there were changes at the bottom. Desford defeated Blaby & Whetstone 4-2, with Macauley Parnell scoring in the 12th minute, before three goals in six minutes from Sam Kibble, Callum Brown and Parnell again effectively sealed the points, Simon Humphrys and Jake Smith scoring for Blaby. However, Desford stay in the bottom two, as Khalsa took a point in their 1-1 draw at home to Sileby Town, Jake Pullin for Khalsa, Callum Glover for Sileby.

In Everards Brewery Division One, leaders Asfordby had a weekend off, but strengthened their position as several of their chasing rivals stumbled. Sporting Markfield fell to a surprise 4-2 loss at Holwell Sports Reserves, whilst Burbage Old Boys, who had their game re-scheduled because of Asfordby’s free weekend request, lost 2-0 at Dunton & Broughton United.

Barlestone now prop up the table, because Kibworth Town scored their first win of the season with a 5-2 triumph at home to Birstall United Reserves. Ollie Magee scored twice, joined on the scoresheet by Kieron Bedford, Michael Blair and Thomas Hooley, Kamsi Ojukwu and Charlie Seager for Birstall. Loughborough FC are now the only Division One side without a win, and sit just a point above Barlestone, having not recorded a League win since May 2019 - their game at Anstey Town was postponed, whilst Barrow Town Reserves’ game at home to Earl Shilton Albion was postponed because Albion were unable to fulfill the fixture.

Into Everards Brewery Division Two, Thurnby Rangers Reserves got their first win since March 2020 beating Rothley Imperil 6-2. AFC North Kilworth made it five from five with a 4-1 win at home to Desford Reserves, who had Simon Goodman on the scoresheet for them, Desford also searching still for the elusive first win.

The team best-placed to stalk upon the top two should they drop points is Sutton Bonington, who won 4-1 at Sileby Town Reserves. Charlie Dunkin scored at the back post on 17 minutes to give Sutton the lead, and whilst Joe Hetterley levelled from the spot, three goals in the last quarter gave SB the points, as Jordan Crossland scored an overhead kick, before Dunkin smashed home a pass down the middle of the park, and then added a tap-in to round off a hat-trick.
