Deserved recognition for cricket stalwarts
TWO stalwarts of Earl Shilton Town cricket club have been honoured at the Leicestershire and Rutland Grassroots Cricket Awards.
Held at Leicestershire’s Upton Steel County Ground, the awards are designed to recognise the incredible volunteers who contribute so much to the game and Earl Shilton Town’s Howard Verow won the Leicestershire Unsung Hero award while Justin Robins was recognised in the Lifetime Achievement category.
Earl Shilton Town CC chairman Mick Coe said: “Howard started life as a young lad scoring for the club before being given the opportunity to play. Playing for such a long time with the club well into his late sixties and giving so much to the club not only as a player but also in the impact on helping the Juniors over many years, together with his brilliant efforts as club groundsman is the reason for his nomination.
“At 70 years of age Howard continues not only as groundsman but as a valuable committee member and club director and his impact on the club is immeasurable. He is always there to offer help, and volunteer when jobs need doing and supports others in doing whatever is needed.”
And Mr Coe also paid tribute to the efforts of Justin Robins: “He’s a man that our club could not do without. It is the administrative roles at the club on the committee and as a board director, that make Justin such an integral of our club and someone who lives and breathes the club.
“His role as Director and in particular past Treasurer and current Company Secretary, is so fundamental in the club still being in existence. Without his determined efforts over the past 30 years the club would certainly have disappeared without his continued support.”
