Desford earn vital point

-

THE title race in the Everards Leicestershire Senior League took some interesting turns this week. In the Premier Division, Rugby Borough maintained their 100% record with two easy victories, while Thurnby Rangers stay top, but cracked and dropped points in a stunning upset away to Ellistown.

Allexton & New Parks who won 3-0 at Sileby Town and Glenfield United beat Hathern 4-1. At the bottom, there were two six-pointers that were critical to the relegation battle. Fleckney Athletic stay bottom, but earned a point with a 0-0 draw at home to Desford.

The point allowed Desford to climb out of the drop zone on goal difference, where they are replaced by Ashby Ivanhoe Knights, who lost the other relegation six-pointer at home to Khalsa 6-1.

This weekend was supposed to be County Cup weekend, but the cancellation of all adult County Cup competitions in Leicestershire & Rutland this season means that the Everards Leicestershire Senior League added another round of fixtures in.

In Everards Brewery Division One, morning leaders Asfordby were sidelined with opponents Loughborough FC still sitting out for 10 days owing to Covid cases at the club.

With Burbage Old Boys also requesting a free weekend, the only change in the top 6 came with the arrival of Anstey Town in the top half of the table, as they won 4-0 at Barrow Town Reserves, Harry Burton (2), Mark Brown and Aiden Lockett the scorers, completing a bad week for the Riversiders, whose point at Kirby on the opening day of the campaign was chalked off this week for fielding an ineligible player. Town’s advance came at the expense of Friar Lane & Epworth Reserves, who slid to a 3-0 defeat at home to Barlestone St Giles, who climbed off the bottom and out of the relegation zone with that win, coming through goals from Daniel Morris (2) and Ben Smith.

Loughborough now have the wooden spoon, still searching for the first win, and they are joined by Birstall United Reserves in the drop zone, who lost 6-1 at Ingles Reserves, who got themselves clear of the relegation battle with the win.
