Bosworth win despite wholesale changes

-

ONLY three games into the new season and Market Bosworth have had to make wholesale changes.

In this week’s side the pack only had three players who played in the first game of the season and the hooker in that first game is now playing at flanker, whilst in the backs the scrum half of two weeks ago is now at full back and one of the second row players was on the wing two weeks ago. It remains to be seen if and when things will settle down. Just before kick-off both teams lined up to join the spectators in acknowledging the deaths of eight members who had died during the covid shut down.

Adventurous play by Bosworth, close to the Vipers line, got Harry Milner over for the first score of the match, successfully converted by Joe Randon.

Play continued around the midfield for a lengthy period until the Bosworth number eight, T.Handford, went over for their second try right out on the edge of the goal area. However, the kicker, Joe Randon was on form and slotted the ball over for an exceptional kick and his second conversion.

Vipers seemed to get their game together at this stage and produced a great attacking run down the wing getting to within five metres of the Bosworth line, winning a scrum but losing the ball in their haste only to recover quickly to get their full back over the line for their first try, but failing to convert it.

During the run up to half time Vipers made several mistakes in front of their own posts, making it possible for Bosworth’s inform kicker, Joe Randon, to add a couple of penalty kicks to the score which at half time was 20-5 in Bosworth’s favour.

The second half continued where Bosworth had left off with Randon adding another three points to the score.

At this point Bosworth’s prop Summers had to leave the field with a blood injury. Vipers worked their way towards the Bosworth line and when awarded a penalty in front of the posts they chose to kick for touch, winning the line out and going over for their second try which this time they converted bringing the score to 23-12 in Bosworth’s favour.

The game developed into a very entertaining affair until one of the Bosworth props got a yellow card for collapsing the scrum and with no suitable replacement uncontested scrums were adopted for ten minutes during which Vipers used the advantage to dive over for their third try and a successful conversion.

During the next phase of play Bosworth, having worked their way into the Vipers twenty-two, were awarded a penalty in front of the posts to enable Joe Randon to add yet another three points to Bosworth’s tally.

Vipers were now trailing by only seven points and with the clock ticking away it looked as though they might just catch up for a draw but it was not to be as the referee awarded Bosworth another penalty which they cleared to touch as the final whistle blew, much to the relief of the Bosworth supporters but giving Vipers a useful bonus point.

After three games Bosworth are fifth in the league but with a points scored difference better than second placed Stamford who Bosworth lost to by only two points last week.
