Champions lose season opener to Queens Mira

IN DIVISION One of the Hinckley and District Table Tennis league, previous champions Goons 1 did not get off to the start they wanted losing by 6 sets to 4 away to Queens Mira.

Both Dan Hogan and Ian Heavey were unbeaten by any Goons player. Although Steve White (Goons 1) took Hogan to five games before losing 9-11 in the fifth. He also took a game from Heavey.

George Ward B started the season well with a comfortabl­e 10-0 victory over X-Cat 2.The match was however closer than the score suggests with no fewer than six sets going to four games or more. Player of the match was GWB’s Daniel Whittaker who won his three comfortabl­y.

In Division Two Market Bosworth 1 got off to a fine start defeating Hit’n’hope B by 9-1. Pete Muir was the outstandin­g player for Bosworth, but youngster Harry Thomas also caught the eye with an impressive performanc­e to also take three wins.

George Ward C collected a useful win over X-Cat 4 at the G Ward Centre, the home side raced into three sets to one lead after four sets but then X-Cat 4 hit back with wins by both Alex Downes and Alex Westerby to bring the score to three sets all, then GW C collected vital wins through Richard Chesters and Rob Webster to lead by 5 sets to 3. Player of the match Alex Downes (xx-Cat 4 ) won the ninth set to bring the score to 5 sets to 4 to G Ward. Jackie Flavell and Webster took the doubles to secure the win by 6-4.

X -Cat C had just too much strength in depth for the young GW D side but with no fewer than eight sets going to four or more games it was a close affair. James Walker (GWD) was outstandin­g collecting three fine wins. For X-Cat C both Jeffrey Oddy and Kevin Edwards won two each. The final score was X-Cat C 6 -G Ward D 4.

Finally Goons 2 had a 10-0 win over a young Market Bosworth B side. Steven Burrage (Goons 2) was player of the match.
